Thanks so much for this informative article. I grew up in the African-American inner city neighborhoods of Los Angeles (Exposition Park, Compton) of the late 1950s, and I still have vivid memories of being 9 or 10 years old and making a beeline after school every other week to our neighborhood public library to check out armloads of science fiction books (Asimov was my favorite). In retrospect looking back, with a PhD now and my own online digital publishing company (www.bluelogic.us), I see how those neighbood public libraries protected me from the street gang wars literally raging around me at the time. They helped my impressionable child’s mnd simply do a disconnect inside from that world and enter another one. It would a shame, no a moral catastrophe, to see those libraries disappear. Let me know how I can help prevent this from happening (or reverse it if it already has) Blue Logician

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked it up, but was pleasantly surprised by the flow and how wrapped up I was in the book.

By the by, it was great meeting you at #IBE11. Awesome site.

I really enjoyed this book. Apparently it’s being made into a movie. Should be interesting to see how that turns out.

There really is a strong social stigma about female addicts, more so than male addicts. Strangely, though, in my experience, women tend to recover much better than men; their recovery is more long-term, with fewer if any relapses. It’s weird.

This sounds like a good read. I’ll have to add it to my Goodreads list — no pun intended.

Finished TSB about a week ago and thoroughly enjoyed it; this is one of those books that has you whipsawing between chuckling at the brilliant prose style and wincing at the sheer horror of human idiocy, often in the same paragraph. Thanks to the Coen Brothers' adaptation of True Grit, I kept hearing Eli's dialogue in Jeff Daniels' voice.

I really can’t wait to hear your thoughts. I’m telling you maybe it was the fact that it was 2am, maybe my allergies were really
bad (which they are), but I was a balling mess.
It’s just so apropos of the current war climate we face today, and I wonder how many other families are experiencing what
the Bliss family did. (even though this is fiction)
